  • Q: What are the health and safety requirements for visitors to the Porgera Gold Mine?
      A: All visitors MUST wear enclosed footwear on all PJV charter flights at the operating ports in PNG and Cairns, Australia.

      Any visitor to the Porgera Gold Mine will be inducted upon arrival and will be issued the minimum Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) prior to any engagement on the Mine site.

      Some visitors may have high altitude-related medical conditions and so are reminded to consult your physician prior to visiting Porgera.

  • Q: Are there specific restrictions that I should know before visiting the Porgera Gold Mine?
      A: PJV has a zero tolerance policy on drugs and alcohol. All personnel travelling on PJV charter flights are subject to breathalizer tests on arrival and departure from Porgera. Chewing of betel nut is prohibited on any PJV premises or locations including the carriage of arms and ammunitions.

      Within the Porgera gold mine operational site, no visitor is to have in her/his possession a personal camera or a telephone unless approved and is issued a permit. These items must be locked away at the camps.

  • Q: How do I travel to Porgera from Port Moresby?
      A: Jacksons International Airport in Port Moresby is one of the PJV charter operating ports and weekly flights operate between Port Moresby and Kagamuga in Mt Hagen.

      Upon arrival at Kagamuga, PJV chartered fixed wing aircrafts operated by Hevilift, operates between Mt Hagen and Kairik Aiport in Porgera. There is also a helicopter landing pad (helipad) in the vicinity of the mine site. 
      Upon arrival in Porgera, PJV hire buses ferry visitors to the PJV camps and villages. 

      Baggage weight limit on all PJV charter flights is 10kg per person on board.

  • Q: What is the weather like in Porgera?
      A: Porgera is situated about 7,500 feet above sea level and has mild climate. Rainfall is high throughout the year. First time visitors are enouraged to pack a reliable rain coat and sweater to keep warm at night. An umbrella is also advisable.

  • Q: Are there medical services at the Porgera Gold Mine?
      A: A 24-hour operational Mine Medical Center (MMC) is located at the mine site and is well equipped to deal with a range of trauma and multi-casualty incidents. The center has a full time staff comprising four doctors and six nursing staff and is well equipped with diagnostic capabilities, including X-ray and blood analysis. The center also facilitatets medical evacuations (medivac).

  • Q: Who owns the Porgera Gold Mine?
  • The Porgera Gold Mine in Enga Province, Papua New Guinea, is owned by the Porgera Joint Venture (PJV).

    It is operated by Barrick (Niugini) Limited (“BNL”) which owns 95 percent participating interest in PJV. The remaining 5% is owned by Mineral Resources Enga (MRE) Limited.
